What's the Buzz: Bella Terra Vineyards

Updated: Oct 24, 2025

Discovering Bella Terra Vineyards - Three Generations of Passion in Niagara-on-the-Lake

Nestled in the heart of Ontario's celebrated wine country, Bella Terra Vineyards stands as a testament to multi-generational passion, heritage, and the beautiful land—or bella terra—that gives the winery its name. Tucked away in the prestigious Four Mile Creek sub-appellation of Niagara-on-the-Lake, this family-owned estate offers more than just exceptional wine; it offers a taste of history.

A Story Rooted in Sicily and Niagara

The story of Bella Terra begins in 1965 when Giuseppe Puglisi emigrated to Canada, bringing with him a deep passion for grape-growing and winemaking. The family officially began tending their 50-acre grape farm in 1974. Today, the winery is proudly run by the third generation, led by proprietor Luciano (Lou) Puglisi.

When you sip a Bella Terra wine, you are tasting three generations of expertise. Lou Puglisi's dedication to quality and respect for the winemaking process earned him the title of Grape King in 2008, an honour awarded to the finest vineyard operator in Ontario by the Ministry of Agriculture. The winery’s logo itself celebrates this legacy, featuring a modernized Sicilian clay tile with the sun at its centre, symbolizing the connection between the Puglisi family's Sicilian roots and the perfect balance of earth and sun in Niagara.

The Wines: From Appassimento to Icewine

Bella Terra Vineyards boasts a diverse and award-winning portfolio, carefully crafted from their estate-grown grapes.

  • Robust Reds: Their offerings include complex, bold selections such as Meritage and the high-end, concentrated Cabernet Appassimento. For a taste of their playful side, look for their popular, cheekily-named Cabernet Franc blend, "Calm the Franc Down!"

  • Crisp Whites & Rosés: They produce a variety of whites like Chardonnay (including a Sur Lie style), Pinot Grigio, Sauvignon Blanc, and Viognier.

  • Sparkling & Sweet: The collection is rounded out with beautiful bubbles like Sparkling Brut and Sparkling Rosé, as well as the prized, concentrated flavours of their Icewines (such as Cabernet Franc or Vidal Icewine).

Your Visit: Tastings and Experiences

Bella Terra is renowned for its warm hospitality and engaging visitor experiences. Whether you are a casual sipper or a dedicated connoisseur, there is an experience tailored for you:

  • Wine Club: Joining the club means becoming family, with quarterly shipments, special perks, and access to exclusive events.

The winery's beautiful setting, complete with sprawling vineyards and a scenic pond, also makes it a spectacular venue for private events. With their Vineyard Tent and breathtaking views, Bella Terra is a highly sought-after location for weddings in Niagara-on-the-Lake.

Visitors consistently praise the knowledgeable staff and inviting atmosphere, making Bella Terra Vineyards an essential stop on any Niagara wine tour.

One thing we particularly liked about our visit to Bella Terra Vineyards is that it's outside the bustling towns of Virgil and Niagara-on-the-lake, in the heart of the wine region, on a country road surrounded by vines. It was a heavenly place to bike to. So why not grab a bike from Buzz Bikes and travel in style. Bella Terra has bike racks conveniently located right beside their outdoor patios!
